Goals & Highlights

Match Summary

Barcelona, who are the reigning LaLiga champions, started their title defense with a 3-0 win against RCD Mallorca at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix. This brought their record of consecutive away victories to eight and added to manager Jagoba Arrasate’s personal losing streak against Barcelona, which is now at nine matches.

From the very beginning, Barcelona took control of the game and scored just seven minutes into the match.
They created a lot of pressure early on, and a great cross from Lamine Yamal found Raphinha, who was unmarked and headed the ball into the net at the far post. Mallorca fought back hard, and Joan García put in a good save to stop Vedat Muriqi’s weak shot. But Barcelona scored again in a controversial moment. Even though a Mallorca player was down on the floor after heading the ball clear and the referee had the whistle in his hand, Barcelona continued playing and Ferran Torres finished with a beautiful shot into the top corner.

The reaction from the crowd at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix was stunned.
Just after the half-hour mark, Manu Morlanes was sent off for a bad tackle, making it even harder for Mallorca. Some home fans started leaving early, and the first half took another bad turn just six minutes later when Muriqi was red-carded for kicking Joan García in the face. The situation got worse when Raphinha fouled Mateu Morey in the seventh minute of stoppage time, but he only got a yellow card. The crowd was very upset and voiced their anger as the teams left the field at halftime.

In the second half, the game became a clear case of attack versus defense.
Yamal continued to cause problems for the defenders, sending in two quick crosses that almost led to a third goal for Barcelona. Just before the hour mark, Leo Román made a superb one-handed save to stop Barcelona, and although he was beaten later by Raphinha’s curled low shot, it narrowly missed the target.

In a rare chance for the home team to cut the gap, Johan Mojica's free-kick in the 65th minute was spot on, but no Mallorca player tried to take that chance. To stop any hope of a surprising comeback, Hansi Flick waited just two more minutes to bring Marcus Rashford into the game for his first competitive appearance for Barcelona, with Rashford joining Gavi and Jofre Torrents on the pitch.

Showing they had more players to call on, Barcelona kept pushing forward.
Dani Olmo hit the post, and Raphinha missed a chance that was almost the same as one he'd had a few minutes before. Pedri also tried his luck late in the game with a powerful shot, but it was Yamal who scored the third goal and had a standout performance in stoppage time. In his usual style, the young player moved inside and shot a curling left footed strike that left Román reaching for nothing. In the end, Barcelona secured their 14th win in their last 17 opening day matches (two draws, one loss), while Mallorca suffered their first loss on matchday one in 10 years.
