Crystal Palace preparing a January transfer for Joe Willock.

Crystal Palace is reportedly interested in acquiring 26-year-old English midfielder Joe Willock from Newcastle United during the upcoming winter transfer window.

According to a report from the Daily Telegraph, Joe Willock has caught the attention of Crystal Palace. The Eagles are eager to strengthen their first-team roster by adding a versatile midfielder this winter. Consequently, the 26-year-old outcast from Newcastle United has become a target for the South London club.

How has Joe Willock performed at Newcastle United?

Joe Willock has experienced a rollercoaster journey since his arrival at Newcastle United from Arsenal. The Tyneside club initially brought the Englishman in on loan in February 2021, later finalizing a permanent transfer for £21 million in the following summer window.

Although the 26-year-old had an outstanding second half of the 2020/21 season, he has faced challenges in making an impact since his permanent transfer to Newcastle United. Willock’s playing time has gradually diminished with each season, as he has only managed to accumulate 277 minutes over eight appearances in all competitions this season.

Nevertheless, the English midfielder's value in the market remains strong, with multiple Premier League teams expressing interest in him this year. A potential return to London could be on the horizon for the out-of-favor Newcastle United midfielder as the winter transfer window approaches, with Crystal Palace being one of the clubs looking to secure his services.

Is a return to London on the cards?

Crystal Palace aimed to acquire Joe Willock during the summer transfer window, but the agreement fell through. Their ongoing interest makes sense, as the Eagles are actively searching for a midfielder with the winter transfer window approaching, especially given the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Will Hughes and Adam Wharton.

Moreover, Jefferson Lerma is over 30, and Cheick Doucoure has faced fitness challenges during his time at Crystal Palace. As a result, several options, including Tyler Morton, have come to the attention of the South London club, with Willock remaining a potential target.

On the other hand, Newcastle United is expected to ask for approximately £21 million to let Willock go, as they aim to maintain compliance with “profitability and sustainability rules” and avoid any violations. However, it remains uncertain whether Crystal Palace will be willing to meet the £21 million asking price for the 26-year-old English midfielder.
